Loaded Caramel Apples (First Attempt)

Ben and I attempted to make Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory style caramel apples. We messed up on the caramel part...we didn't leave the caramel apples in the refrigerator long enough before adding the rest of the ingredients so the caramel started to melt off. Other than that, they turned out great for our first try and tasted AMAZING. This is definitely a new fall tradition!

First we sanded the apples with sandpaper to help the caramel stick better, washed them and dried them. We used wooden barbecue skewers cut in half for the sticks.

We melted Kraft caramel bits in a saucepan with a few teaspoons of water and vanilla extract and dipped the apples in the melted caramel sauce. We let them chill in the fridge for about an hour. We should have left them longer, maybe 2 or 3 hours.

Next we melted and drizzled white and dark chocolate over the caramel apples and sprinkled them with crushed candy and nuts...heath, snicker, pecans, etc. and let them chill in the fridge for another hour.

These are SOOOO delicious! I can't wait to give them another try.
