Lesson 44: Jesus the Good Shepherd

Supplies:
Sheep illustration

While Jesus was on earth, He said, "I am the Good Shepherd. God's children are my sheep". A shepherd's job was to take care of the sheep. A shepherd will never let anything hurt his sheep. Jesus told a story to help us remember that He will always take care of us. Remember, He is like the Shepherd, and we are like the sheep.

Once there was a shepherd who had a hundred sheep. The shepherd took very good care of the sheep. Every day he found food and water for them. He made sure they didn't get hurt. He loved his sheep.

Every day he counted them. He made sure they all stayed together. One day, a little sheep decided to be bad. Instead of staying with all the other sheep, this little sheep went off by himself. He climbed up a big mountain. All the way to the very top. And then he fell down! He was hurt. He couldn't move and he couldn't go home!

Far away, the shepherd was counting the sheep. He only counted 99. He knew one of the sheep was gone! The shepherd ran to the mountain. Finally he found the little hurt sheep. He picked him up and carried him home.

The shepherd was so happy! He kept the little sheep safe because he loved him. Jesus told this story to show us that He takes care of us just like the shepherd took care of his little lost sheep. If we are in trouble, He keeps us safe. Jesus loves us.

The words of this story were copied from some preschool Bible flashcards that belong to my mom (copyright by CRC Publications 1988...this is the only info I have on the cards. I'm not sure where they originally came from). I am posting this for Sunday School and homeschooling purposes only and I do not claim myself as the author of these stories.
