MFW Unit 12: Goat

The theme of week 12 of My Father's World kindergarten was goats. We read some books about goats and we drank goats milk. There were not many extra activities for this unit so we went through the whole 6 days worth of worksheets and lessons in 2 days.

The Bible theme was "Jesus died for my sins". We talked about how the punishment for sin is death, and people used to sacrifice goats to pay for their sins until Jesus came as the ultimate sacrifice once for all and now we are forgiven because Jesus took our punishment for us. It is a pretty abstract concept for a 4 year old to understand, but Mercedes asked a lot of questions and seemed to get it as much as any little kid can. She loves God and trusts Him and talks to Him and about Him all the time, and that is about as much as I can hope for for her age.

My prayer is that through these little Bible lessons we will start building a foundation for her to one day develop a solid relationship with Jesus. For now I am just enjoying her childlike faith, her innocent prayers and how eagerly and joyfully she accepts everything she learns about God.

MFW Unit 11: Insects

The theme of Unit 11 of My Father's World Kindergarten was Insects. The Bible theme was "I am a wise child, so I work hard." We learned about ants and other insects and how hard they work every day.

We made lady bug snacks with apples, peanut butter and craisins.

We made ants on a log with celery, peanut butter and craisins.

We learned how bees make honey,,,and tried some! Mercedes LOVES raw organic honey. This day, we also read and discussed Psalm 19:7-10 "The law of the Lord is perfect...the rules of the Lord are right...they are sweeter than honey that is taken from the honeycomb."

We read some insect books from the library in addition to our internet research.

We painted ladybugs using giant flat marbles.

We used craisin "ants" to learn simple addition and subtraction concepts. "If 3 ants go to a picnic, and they invite 2 more friends to come, how many ants will be at the picnic? If 5 ants are at a picnic and one goes home, how many are left at the picnic?"

And Mercedes' FAVORITE activity that we've done this whole year so far has been observing the ants in her ant farm! She LOVES watching them build tunnels. It has been so fun watching the tunnels progress day to day!

MFW Unit 10: Water

The theme of My Father's World Kindergarten Unit 10 was Water. The Bible theme was "Jesus gives my spirit living water to drink". We discussed John 7:37-39 " 'If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me,...streams of living water will flow from within him.' By this He means the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive."

For science, we did lots of water experiments and learned about how water can take 3 forms...solid, liquid and gas.

We made different shapes with ice cubes.

We boiled water to see the steam, which is water in gas form.

We poured water into different shaped containers to learn that when water is in liquid form it has no shape of it's own.

We learned what the word "dissolve" means by dissolving salt in water.

And we learned that oil does not dissolve in water, but stays separated, even after you mix and mix and mix it!

MFW Unit 9: Octopus

The theme of unit 9 of Mercedes' My Father's World Kindergarten was the Octopus. The Bible theme was "Even the octopus praises the Lord" based on Psalm 145:21, "My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord. Let every creature praise His holy name for ever and ever." We read lots of books about the octopus and other sea creatures and talked about how God's creation praises Him by showing us what an amazing and creative artist He is.

In addition to reading lots of octopus and sea creatures books, we made octopus hot dogs for a snack one day.

We used paint and Mercedes' hand prints to make a googly eye octopus.

Then cut it out to add to our ocean collage made with blue paint for water, sand paper for the ocean floor, and fish we printed and cut out off of the computer.

Thanksgiving (2014)

This Thanksgiving, for the very first time, we did not have a big fancy dinner with extended family. Instead it was just the four of us. The girls and I did some crafts to celebrate what Emerald referred to as "Thank You Day".

Inspired by Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, we made Thank You Day cards for some of the people the girls appreciate.

We also made Thank You Trees tracing the girls' arms and hands for the trunk and branches, and their hands for the leaves.

I asked them to make a list of some of the things they wanted to thank God for and wrote them on the leaves of the trees. Mercedes was thankful for so many things I made an overflow list to hang next to her tree.

"Thank You Day" was super chill. We ate cinnamon rolls for breakfast, ham, pineapples and homemade caramel apples for lunch, turkey, mashed sweet potatoes and green beans for dinner and apple crumble bars with vanilla ice cream for dessert.
